With all the activity going on in our lives, it can be easy to neglect some relatively simple tasks in our lives and homes. Is this true for you, too?
Have you ever stopped to look at the inconspicuous areas in your home? the light fixtures, windows, window treatments, etc. When we first install them, we notice how bright they are, how new and clean everything feels. And then after a while everything fades into the background of our lives. Our family and friends (our true friends anyway!) are more interested in us than the crevices and fixtures of our home.
But what if you are a new homebuyer? Your senses are much more heightened when you’re looking for your dream home, right? How do you feel when you walk in a home and see sparkling light fixtures, polished chrome surfaces, and clean windows (as you’re checking out the backyard from various vantage points in the home). Dirty light fixtures, dusty can lights in the ceiling, dirty air vents or bathroom ceiling fan, and cobwebs in the corners will not make or break the deal, but they do leave a “first impression” of that home and may indicate how well the seller takes care of other items in the home.
When you are getting ready to put your home on the market, there are a few simple tasks you can do to leave a lasting impression about your home and possibly bring that homebuyer back for a second showing.
1. Take the time to check and clear all cobwebs.
2. Clean any glass portions of all light fixtures (don’t forget to dust the bulbs, too). Dirty light fixtures not only look bad, they reduce brightness and waste energy.
3. Check your can lights in the ceiling. Do you have a collection of dust in and around them?
4. What about the ceiling fan in the bathrooms? When was the last time you really looked at them?
5. What about the chrome faucets in your home. Are they shiny or dull looking or riddled with water spots?
6. With the warmer weather now, it is easier to wash the interior and exterior of the windows.
7. This would be the perfect time to vacuum or wash your window treatments as well.
8. Take a peek at your air vents. They are a collection point for dust and cobwebs also.
9. Be sure to change the filter in your furnace.10. This is also a good time to take those extra items off of your countertops to show the true size of the kitchen and working space.
