Should I Decorate for Winter and Christmas if I’m Selling My Home?

November 14, 2016 Posted by admin Uncategorized
I looked at the calendar today and realized we are seven weeks from the start of the New Year (and we are still enjoying beautiful fall weather).  If you are considering selling your home yet this year, buyers searching for a home are the most serious at this time of the year.

You may be wondering if you should do any decorating for winter or Christmas, if you are considering selling your home or have your home on the market now. The answer is Yes!.  You do not have to forgo decorating just because your home is on the market.

Enjoy your Christmas traditions; however, I would recommend you limit the number of decorations you use.  In our August blog, we talked about the importance of decluttering so the buyer can see your home’s features and potential.  You want to show off your home, not your holiday decorations.  Below are a few decorating tips you might find useful:

  1. Add tasteful, generic decorations.  Avoid personalized tree ornaments and Christmas stockings.
  2. Choose a neutral palette of green, silver and gold, classic white, elegant, simple touches.
  3. Bows and ribbons, and throw pillows, add a splash of color.   Avoid “cute” decorations.
  4. For every Christmas item you add, remove a non-holiday accessory.
  5. Consider staging your kitchen table as if you were going to throw a holiday party.
  6. Live greens and baked goods enhance the senses.  Leave a plate of cookies on the counter for your potential buyers.  Who can pass up a sweet treat?
  7. Soothing music (does not have to be holiday music) in the background also leaves the buyers with a welcoming feeling as they move throughout your home.
  8. Don’t forget the exterior.  Simple, well-placed decor (such as a wreath on the front door) creates a festive holiday mood.

Keep your decorations up for a limited time – two weeks before and two weeks after Christmas.  Remember to keep your valuable gifts and heirlooms out of sight.  And don’t forget to remove the snow from your walks prior to a showing.

If you have additional questions about decorating your home for the Christmas season, please do not hesitate to contact me.  We are here to help you with all of your real estate needs!!
